Circa 1752

About the Item

Circle of François Boucher (French 1703 - 1770), Study of a Child. This charming work is probably a study for a painting, it shows a child with a swathe of billowing fabric over her head and back. This is a composition that Boucher used in paintings, see examples below. François Boucher was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher, who worked in the Rococo style. Boucher first won fame with his sensuous and light-hearted mythological paintings and pastoral landscapes. He executed important decorative commissions for the queen at Versailles and his friend and patron, Madame de Pompadour, at Versailles, Marly, and Bellevue. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1734. Then he became the principal producer of designs for the royal porcelain factories, as well as director of the Gobelins tapestry factory. Later in 1765 he became director of the Royal Academy and held the title of first painter to King Louis XV. François Boucher is known for his idyllic and voluptuous paintings of classical themes, decorative allegories, and pastoral scenes. He was arguably the most celebrated painter and decorative artist of the 18th century. Provenance: Morton Henry Lee former dealer of important French art and a member of the Lee dynasty of antique dealers.
