About the Item

William James Blacklock (English, 1816-1858) Rural Landscape, Watercolor on paper, 5 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches Framed: 15 x 18 inches (approx.) Inscribed on verso: (in pencil) "Heath scene in Cumberland/by W.J. Blacklock"; (pencil, different hand) "1815-1858" [sic] One of the finest painters of the English Lake District and "a truthful and unpretending artist, who wooed nature rather than popular favor," William Blacklock was born in London. In 1818, the family moved to a small village in what is now Cumbria in the north of England. Apprenticed to Charles Thurnam, a publisher and bookseller in Carlisle, Blacklock would eventually study painting at the Academy of Art, where he also began exhibiting in 1833. He moved to London in 1836 where he had a successful career as a painter until ill health precipitated his return north where he was hospitalized. Blacklock died at the age of 42 from paralytic dementia.
