J E Compton Keel
Pair of Impressionist Watercolour Landscapes, Spring and Autumn

About the Item

A pair of watercolour landscapes, Spring and Autumn by J E Compton Keel. Both paintings are signed bottom left. Presented in very fine custom patinated 'Regence' frames under glass with Christies auction labels to the back stretchers. Provenance: Acquired from Christies London, thence by descent. A beautiful pair of watercolour landscapes of forest and moorland under a moody and atmospheric sky. One depicts the yellow broom and strong green foliage of spring the other the more subtle watery tones of autumn. Compton Keel has taken full advantage of the medium of watercolour to paint in a free and loose but impactful manner and together the pair, presented in the most magnificent frames would make an worthy addition to any collection and a statement in any interior. While watercolour painting dominated Asian art for thousands of years, in Western art it was largely confined to preparatory sketches until the late 18th century. In what is now referred to as the Golden Age of watercolour painting, artists from the school of English landscape painting raised the status of watercolour painting to a serious and independent artform. In addition to William Turner, famous watercolourists from the English school included: Thomas Girtin (1775-1802), John Constable (1776-1837), and Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-28). In the late 19th century and 20th century, European artists like Emil Nolde (1867-1956) and Egon Schiele (1890-1918), as well as American painters such as Winslow Homer (1836-1910), Maurice Prendergast (1859-1924) and John Marin (1870-1953), produced hundreds of colourful paintings using the medium. In 'pure' watercolour painting colour tones and atmospheric effects are achieved by staining the paper when wet with varying amounts of colour pigments. Referred to as a 'wash', this technique can also be used to minimize or erase individual brush strokes, or to create large areas of similar colour (eg. blue sky). The artist controls the effects of these washes by varying the dilution of the pigments. JMW Turner - perhaps the greatest English watercolourist - preferred to add white to his paintings and used other methods to create his unique effects of light such as in this pair of paintings.

  • A Fishing Boat at Sea, Late Mid-Century Gouache on Paper
    Located in Cotignac, FR
French gouache on paper of a boat travelling the seas. The work is unsigned but dated 22/11/70. Presented in simple gilt frame with handcut mount. A really engaging and powerful painting. The artist has managed to capture the swell of the sea, the movement of the boat listing gently to one side, the slightly rusty hull, the moody sky filled with all the seagulls following behind, which suggests it might be a fishing boat. They have used a limited but strong colour palette, blues, blacks and greys and then just to highlight and catch the eye a splash of green to represent the starboard or right bow light.
