Giovanni Sottocornola was born in Milan on August 1, 1855, in the decade that gave birth to the entire Divisionist generation: Vittore Grubicy, Gaetano Previati, Angelo Morbelli, Giovanni Mentessi, Giovanni Segantini, and Emilio Longoni.
Left fatherless at an early age, he was able to embark on regular studies relatively late: in 1875 he enrolled at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where for three years he attended courses taught by Raffaele Casnedi and Giuseppe Bertini, custodians of the traditional academic magisterium attentive to the rules of drawing and perspective: his fellow students were Previati, Segantini and Longoni. His beginnings led him to execute portraits and still lifes in Divisionist taste.
In the years following 1898 he abandoned the theme of painting with a social and committed background, returning to portraits and genre scenes inspired by family affections and his own domestic sphere, with predominantly female subjects reproduced with pointillist technique and the frequent use of pastel. Sojourns in the Lombardy Pre-Alps and Valassina mountains are common during this period.
