Gerald Leslie Brockhurst was awarded a gold medal and a travelling scholarship in 1913 by the Royal Academy School. Brockhurst used the prize in 1914 to first visit France and then Italy, where the works of the Renaissance masters, such as Piero della Francesca, Leonardo da Vinci and of course Sandro Botticelli had a lasting influence on his artistic development, especially his portraiture.
This water colour on offer, dated May 6th 1915, falls into this exciting period - a valuable, early bead, which sits perfectly on the long strand of the great artist's oeuvre.
Sandro Botticelli's fresco (detached and mounted on canvas, 238 × 284 cm) 'A Young Man Being Introduced to the Seven Liberal Arts, c. 1486, was acquired in 1882, by the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France.

Gerald Leslie Brockhurst
(b Birmingham, 31 Oct. 1890; d Franklin Lakes, NJ, 4 May 1978). British-born painter and etcher who became an American citizen in 1949. Precociously gifted, an excellent draughtsman, and a fine craftsman, Brockhurst won several prizes at the Royal Academy Schools and went on to have a highly successful career as a society portraitist, first in Britain and then in the USA, where he settled in 1939, working in New York and New Jersey. He is best known for his portraits of glamorous women, painted in an eye-catching, dramatically lit, formally posed style similar to that later associated with Annigoni. As an etcher Brockhurst is remembered particularly for Adolescence (1932), a powerful study of a naked girl on the verge of womanhood staring broodingly into a mirror—one of the masterpieces of 20th-century printmaking.

- Gustav Melcher ( German, 1898 -?) Boats off Venice Italy Ink Water Color c. 1918By Gustav MelcherLocated in Meinisberg, CHGustav Melcher (German, 1898-?) Segelschiffe vor Venedig - Sailing ships off Venice • India ink, water colour wash • Visible image ca. 11.5 x 18 cm • Glased Frame ca. 20 x 25 cm • Verso various inscriptions • Signed lower right Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Gustav Melcher was a German painter and a pioneer in film, film criticism and film theory and created this clever little picture of the skyline of Venice with various vessels. Going by the various inscriptions an the backing paper, this drawing was made in 1918 when Gustav was twenty years old and passed on three years later to Gertrud Melcher on the 1. 2. 1921. I have no reasons to doubt this information. The small drawing is still in its unopened frame, so maybe there is more information to be discovered , however this will be the privilege of the next owner. The picture also has retained its original antique frame – note that it has lost over the years various sections of the gesso decoration. The very precisely executed drawing is most enjoyable to look at and doing so, remember you are looking through the eyes of a young man, who saw this foreign sea cape over a century ago. Thank you for your interest and please note, that I offer free worldwide shipping on all my items. Gustav Melcher began his studies at the Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie under Peter Janssen and Eduard von Gebhardt. Originaly he was interested in figurative and portrait painting, but after time he decided to pursue the depiction of land- and marinescapes. Durin his studies the young artist undertook trips to visit England, Scotland, Belgium and France and he joined the artist society Malkasten. It was in those days he would hold speeches to his colleges about this new invention called ‘Kintopp’ – Melcher was a great advocate of the moving pictures...Category

- Such Young Love. The Anticipation of a Kiss. Last of the Pre-Raphaelites.Located in Sutton Poyntz, DorsetNoel Laura Nisbet. English ( b.1887 - d.1956 ). Such Young Love. The Anticipation of a Kiss. Watercolor. Signed. Image size 17.3 inches x 13.8 inches ( 44cm x 35cm ). Frame size 25.4 inches x 20.9 inches ( 64.5cm x 53cm ). Available for sale; this original painting is by Noel Laura Nisbet and dates from around 1930. The watercolor is presented and supplied in its original frame that has an Arts and Crafts aesthetic. This antique painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is ready to hang and display. The watercolor is signed lower right. Noel Laura Nisbet was an English oil and watercolor artist, who painted figures, landscape, fantasy and romantic scenes. She created some wonderful original Pre-Raphaelite-influenced works which are now much sought-after. She was the youngest daughter of Hume Nisbet, a Scottish artist, author and traveller, whose support and generosity enabled her talent to flourish. The family moved from Scotland to London in 1887 and Noel was born in Harrow on 30 December that year. Noel attended the Notre Dame Convent school in Clapham, then studied art at South Kensington, under L.C. Nightingale, where she won three gold medals and the Princess of Wales Scholarship (established on 1863 to reward the most distinguished female art student in the UK and what is now the Republic of Ireland). Noel’s elder sister Margaret also became an artist. In 1910 Noel married Harry Bush, who she had met as a fellow art student. They went on to have two daughters. Harry was away for most of the Great War, and Noel stayed with her daughter Hazel in Bath Cottage in Speen. A few years later her father set up his artistic daughters in two matching houses, with purpose-built attic studios, on an estate then being built in south west London. The address of Noel Nisbet...Category
