About the Item
A meticulously rendered owl at the center of this graphite drawing is the prominent feature of this mandala. Many cultures associate owls with wisdom, intuition and good judgment, a widely held symbol for sacred knowledge. Intricately drawn patterns, planets and small vignettes containing landscapes with endless horizons and delicate crescent moons surround the animal and the edges of the mandala. This drawing is entirely hand-drawn using only pencil on paper. Framed in an off-white wooden frame, 22.25 x 22.25 inches (unframed), 25.25 x 25.25 inches (framed). Signed and titled on the back of the frame.
Japanese-born artist Michiyo Ihara uses only paper and pencil to create artwork that expresses the complexity of the universe. Beginning at the center of the white paper, she makes her first mark. Building outward with amazing skill and intricacy, she rotates the paper to continue the drawing. Each tiny symbol, sometimes animal, plant or planet, exists within a cell-like membrane. One little universe begets another as they grow outward in a beautiful, imperfect near symmetry. Ihara begins each drawing title with the word snowflake to reference the infinite and unique possibilities of creation. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Pfrang studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1974–79. Later he spent many years as an independent artist in Montepulciano, Val d’Orcia and Catania, Italy, interrupted by stays in Munich and Augsburg. He presently lives and works in Berlin. Erwin Pfrang is the grandson of the Munich folk comedian Konstantin Pfrang. Carla Schulz-Hoffmann makes an attempt at characterising the painter: “An artist such as Erwin Pfrang inhabits an alternative world, a tiny microcosm of subjectivity, and lives that life uncompromisingly, with all the limitations and hardships that it entails. Among twentieth-century artists a comparable stance can be encountered perhaps in Jean Fautrier, but certainly in Otto Wols. His oeuvre relates in its figuration to Bosch or James Ensor and his oil painting to Lucian Freud in its painterly quality. Erwin Pfrang is represented by gallerists Fred Jahn, Munich (Exhibition: Don’t Forget Your Mask: Don’t (Part I: Don’t Forget Your Mask), Forget (Part II: Don’t Forget Your Mask), Your Mask (Part III: Don’t Forget Your Mask)Artists: Imi Knoebel, Barry Le Va, Karel Appel, Alexi Tsioris, William N.
