What were gramophones used for?

Gramophones were used to play recorded music. The Volta Laboratory owned by Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell introduced the predecessor to the device, the graphophone, in the 1880s. Emile Berliner invented the first gramophone in the 1890s. It played small flat discs with spiral grooves. On 1stDibs, find a selection of gramophones.
